After a great amount of consideration over the past couple of weeks, the decision has been made to cancel the 2020 Northern Rockies Optometric Conference due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This decision was not what we wanted, and unfortunately many things were out of our control. As we watched closely through this time and discussed the state health orders, we also tried to predict where these numbers would fall in the second half of July. Currently, Wyoming’s allowable congregating numbers for indoor gatherings are at 25 maximum, well behind what we need to pull off some semblance of a conference. Although we do expect these numbers to expand somewhat in the next month, we don’t feel like they will be anywhere near what they need to be to allow for the hotel to be at an operational level for an event such as this. And although we were flexible in having a “different” type of conference this year, the possible scenarios that played out were, for the most part, leading to a negative experience for our attendees and vendors. Moving the event outdoors was also discussed, but again the logistical issues between what we and the hotel could do made it not feasible. The idea of a virtual conference was also discussed. Although our state members, like every other, require these needed CE hours, we feel there are several other avenues our members could take to achieve this… and being “virtual” is not what NROC is all about anyway. It is a western getaway where doctors can interact with each other, speakers, and vendors.
We look forward to being in Cody once again next year so save the date:
